PCEDC Submits $1.5 Million Request for Dover-Foxcroft Water and Sewer Upgrades
Thursday, March 26, 2009
The Piscataquis County Economic Development Council (PCEDC) recently submitted two separate Congressional earmark requests on behalf of the Town of Dover-Foxcroft. The first one, in the amount of $750,000, would be used to upgrade the final 3 miles of the town's 20-mile sewer collection system, a segment comprised of pre-1940 clay pipe that is prone to breakage and damage from tree roots.

The other request is also in the amount of $750,000, and would be used to relocate a one-mile section of its water transmission main that is partially located beneath the Town cemetery. This makes repairs difficult. The line would be relocated to sites adjacent to Route 6/15/16. The 10" cast iron main, installed in 1887, would also be replaced with a new 12" plastic composite water main.

"While these projects will have a significant and immediate impact on the health and safety of the residents of Dover-Foxcroft, it also important to note that these upgrades also represent the removal of significant barriers to business development, which will set the stage for future growth."

These requests were submitted to the office of Congressman Michael Michaud at the end of January, and to the offices of Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins at the end of February. A decision on them will not be expected until late 2009.

The Piscataquis County Economic Development Council (PCEDC) is a countywide organization whose mission is to stimulate long-term sustainable economic development and growth throughout the region.
