The Executive Committee of the PCEDC presents the Myrick Award each year to recognize a Piscataquis County citizen, business or organization who exemplifies Pete Myrick's concern for and commitment to education, economic development and/or civic leadership in the region.
Myrick, a Guilford resident who died in 2002, was a longtime educator in SAD 4 and a founder of the PCEDC, serving as the Council's president in 2001.
Criteria considered in determining the award winner include the overall impact of the candidate's accomplishments, the duration of the candidate's engagement in community service activities, and the breadth of community involvement. French was nominated for the award by Keri Foster of The Piscataquis Observer.
County Commissioner Tom Lizotte, who played a significant role in developing the concept of the Myrick award, was the presenter. French was specifically recognized for her propensity to be the first to step forward and volunteer when there was a need in the community, and to not leave until all the work had been done. Her involvement with Pine Tree Hospice and the Dover-Foxcroft Homecoming were cited as two examples of Sherry's extensive community involvement.
Sherry also has served as the on the Board of Directors of Pine Tree Hospice, and serves on the Guilford Budget Committee and on the Piscataquis Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, as well as offering a Christmas Tree location for both the Dover-Foxcroft and Guilford Kiwanis Christmas Gift Programs.
