Some good news
Maine House Furnishings in Abbot has moved its custom wood furniture manufacturing operations into the Greenville Business Incubator building. The retail operation will still be based in the "Old Titcomb's Store" facility, Rt. 15, Abbot.

More good news
Mayo Regional Hospital announced that they will construct a 5,000 s/f family practice center in Milo. The center will be the first tenant within the new Eastern Piscataquis Industrial Park, a property being jointly developed by the Towns of Milo and Brownville in order to encourage private sector investment.

Some bad news
Milo-based Ox-Yoke Originals, maker of firearm accessory products, has closed its doors. Approximately 25 full time employees have been laid off.

Business Notes 1
O&R Lumbra, a primary hardwood sawmill located in Milo, has changed its name to Lumbra Hardwoods, Inc.

Dover-Foxcroft based Pleasant River Lumber has announced their search for a second sawmill facility somewhere along Rt.2 in the Lincoln/Howland area.

Piscataquis Tourism Task Force
Tourism has and continues to be a large part of Piscataquis County's economy. Two prime studies currently underway to assist in developing that sector within the County include: In order to coordinate tourism development efforts throughout Piscataquis County, the PCEDC requested that the County Commissioners create a public task force that will develop action strategies. This task force will report back to the Commissioners later this year with their conclusions. For more information on the task force, click here or here.

Greenville Town Manager John Simko has been elected to serve on the Eastern Maine Development Corporation's Board of Directors.

Brownville Town Manager Sophie Wilson has agreed to represent Piscataquis County on EMDC's Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy committee.

People Notes 3
Monson Town Manager Judy Doore recently resigned and has taken the Town Manager's position in neighboring Dexter. We're fortunate in having Judy close by as she is a valuable economic development team player.

Sled Dog Racing study underway
Thanks to a generous contribution from the Eastern Maine Development Corporation, the UMaine Margaret Chase Smith Center will undertake an economic feasibility study of dog sled racing in Piscataquis County. This is in response to an increased interest in the sport after the recently successful 100 Mile Dog Sled Race between Greenville and Brownville as well as the Maine Highland's Dog Sled Challenge in Dover-Foxcroft.

Successful CDBG Grants
The PCEDC helped develop two Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) for the towns of Greenville and Dover-Foxcroft. Greenville's $100,000 grant will help supplement C.A. Dean Hospital's capital campaign for a new medial office building. Dover-Foxcroft has received $400,000 in CDBG funds for a water line extension to the Pleasant River Lumber Company.

CHEt Update
Thanks to the Maine Humanities Council, the PCEDC's Cultural Heritage & Eco-tourism (CHEt) Committee has garnered a $1,000 grant to support a traveling exhibit of late 19th and early 20th century photographs taken by the late Bert Call. These unique pictures will be displayed throughout the area and encourage people to take pride in the greatest place in the world: Piscataquis County.
