PCEDC Submits $300,000 Request to Restore Willimantic Bridge
Tuesday, April 14, 2009
The Piscataquis County Economic Development Council (PCEDC) recently submitted a Congressional earmark request on behalf of the Town of Willimantic in the amount of $300,000. If awarded, these funds would be used to restore the town’s 100’ long “Earley Bridge,” which spans Wilson Stream at the head of Sebec Lake, and was constructed in the early 1950’s. The project would include the construction of steel decking and new wood timber bridge abutments that were damaged in the flood of 1987. The State of Maine had recently turned over responsibility for its maintenance to the town.

According to PCEDC Executive Director Thomas Kittredge, “This project is crucial to the Town of Willimantic, both in regards to community development and economic development. If the bridge were allowed to continue to deteriorate and be closed, it would deny many of its residents access to essential services, such as fire, police, and EMS. In addition, it would discourage people from investing in vacation homes in Willimantic, as well as stifle any business development in the future.”

These requests were submitted to the office of Congressman Michael Michaud at the end of January, and to the offices of Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins at the end of February. A decision on them will not be expected until late 2009.

The Piscataquis County Economic Development Council (PCEDC) is a countywide organization whose mission is to stimulate long-term sustainable economic development and growth throughout the region.
