PCEDC Supports Study Recommendations
July 15, 2002
Dover-Foxcroft-  With their focus on Maine's economic future, the Piscataquis County Economic Development Council's Executive Committee on Wednesday [July 10] voted unanimously to endorse the economic development recommendations of “No Place to Hide,” a recently released report from the Institute for a Strong Maine Economy.

The Executive Committee reviewed the report's five principle recommendations and agreed that they were integral to Maine's future economic prosperity.  The recommendations include:

1)    Reducing Maine's tax burden to the national average
2)    Restructuring Maine's tax system to promote private investment, export activity, business competitiveness, stability, and predictability.
3)    Reduce the cost of government by restructuring the delivery of regional and local government services.
4)    Limit the growth of government spending to the growth in gross state product, income, or some other logical benchmark.
5)    Promote a culture of lifelong learning through a seamless educational system.
After their approval of the No Place to Hide report, PCEDC President John Simko stressed the need for the PCEDC to take a leadership position in supporting the recommendations: “It is important for Piscataquis County to be at the forefront of proposals that could have positive economic benefits for us,” he stated.  Executive Committee member Tom Lizotte agreed and added that the Institute's Executive Director, Paula Valente, would be speaking to the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Club about the proposals on July 23rd.  The Kiwanis meets at 6:30 am in the rear of the Bear's Den Restaurant, Dover-Foxcroft, and the public is invited.
