PCEDC: Media Release

GREENVILLE TO HOST INCUBATOR SITE
July 17, 2001
Dover-Foxcroft- Because of a joint grant application between the Piscataquis County and the Southern Maine Regional Planning Commission, Greenville is one step closer to housing a business incubator for wood composites.

The grant, written in part by the Piscataquis County Economic Development Council (PCEDC), allocates $25,000 toward construction of incubator space for Greenville. The incubator will offer low-cost administrative support for a young or start-up company that utilizes wood composites in its production. Specifically, the incubator will provide reception personnel, photocopying, computers, and telephone answering services as well as office supplies and conference space. Two other applications were forwarded to the State but only the Piscataquis/Southern Maine Planning application was successful.

"This grant provided a great partnership opportunity for Piscataquis County," stated PCEDC President Warren "Pete" Myrick. Myrick noted that the State rejected all composite incubator applications in the first grant round citing lack of local matching funds. "We found it impossible to come up with the necessary $250,000 in local funds for the match in the first round but, through negotiations, were able to partner with Southern Maine Regional Planning during the second round." Myrick stated that Southern Maine Regional Planning was able to come up with all the necessary matching funds. Most of the grant will be used to construct a composite incubator building in the Sanford Industrial Park. However, because that building will be small, it will only assist a smaller kind of composite business, primarily one that utilizes fiberglass or lighter forms of composites. Wood composites, on the other hand, require large industrial acreage and a building that allows for larger, heavier machinery. "Even if we had got the whole grant," noted Myrick, "we would not have had enough money to build a proper wood composite incubator space- much less have money for administrative support. This gives us more time to apply for other grants that can help build a proper wood composites incubator." Myrick stated that the PCEDC hopes that a business can utilize the University of Maine's wood composites research and, when graduating, continue to locate their business in Greenville.

Currently, the $25,000 is planned as a contribution toward the Natural Resource Education Center (NREC) building that will be constructed on Rt. 15 south of Greenville. The NREC will have space for the needs of the incubator.
