PCEDC Encourages Citizens To Learn More About Upcoming Motor Vehicle Excise Tax Initiative
Thursday, September 24, 2009
The Piscataquis County Economic Development Council (PCEDC) is encouraging Piscataquis County residents to attend an education session organized by a coalition of organizations including the Maine Municipal Association, the Maine Education Association, the Maine Service Center Coalition, the Maine Better Transportation Association, and the Maine State Employees Association, and hosted by the Town of Greenville, to be held on Tuesday, September 29th, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Greenville Town Office located at 7 Minden Street in Greenville, Maine. This education session will be an opportunity for municipal officials and the general public to obtain more information about this initiative as well as TABOR (Taxpayer Bill Of Rights) II. Maine voters will decide these citizen-initiative proposals on the November 3 election.

According to PCEDC Executive Director Thomas Kittredge, "while the PCEDC is not taking a specific position on the Excise Tax initiative at this time, we do want to make sure residents in Piscataquis County educate themselves as much as possible on this initiative. If it were to pass, Piscataquis County municipalities would be expected to lose $1,052,857 in the aggregate. This reduction in revenues would very likely cause either a corresponding reduction in the amount spent on road repair and maintenance or a corresponding increase in property taxes countywide. Either of these outcomes could significantly hamper current business activity as well as future business development in Piscataquis County."

The Piscataquis County Economic Development Council (PCEDC) is a countywide organization whose mission is to stimulate long-term sustainable economic development and growth throughout the region.
