Maine Educational Assessment (MEA) Scores
The Maine Educational Assessment (MEA) is designed to measure student and school progress in achieving the high academic standards set forth in Maine's Learning Results. The MEA, created as part of the Educational Reform Act of 1984, was redesigned in response to the Maine Legislature's statute creating Learning Results, which passed in April of 1996.

All Maine students in grades 4, 8, and 11 are included in the MEA program. The goal of the MEA program is to create a fair opportunity for all Maine students to have access to and demonstrate achievement of the high standards found in Maine's Learning Results You will find the scores for Piscataquis County's schools here.

One of our public schools (the University of Maine at Farmington) is regularly cited as one of the top ten public liberal arts colleges by US News & World Report. The nearby University of Maine has receiving growing acclaim as a top research and development institution.

Piscataquis County now has its own college center, the Penquis Higher Education Center in Dover-Foxcroft. The Center provides both University and Community College courses for residents interested in pursuing degrees. The PCEDC and local allies asked the State in 2000 to allocate money for the Center and it has experienced enrollment growth ever since. For more information on the coursework offered, contact the Penquis Higher Education Center at (207) 564-2943.

Local Governmental Services
Small town America at its best and friendliest!
Most local services (voting, assessing, code enforcement, property tax collection, etc.) in New England are carried out on the municipal level. All of Piscataquis County municipalities have the direct, "town meeting" form of government in which municipal affairs are decided by the general public rather than elected representatives. Boards of Selectmen are elected by the public to act in an executive function. Six Boards of Selectmen in Piscataquis County (Brownville, Milo, Dover-Foxcroft, Guilford, Monson, and Greenville) have exercised their option for hiring a Town Manager to carry out the day-to-day activities of their community. For more information on the Town Meeting/Selectman form of government, click here.
